Subject areas find particular style formats useful for providing information in the writing in their disciplines.  Here are a few of the most common styles and subject areas they are used in:

APA (American Psychological Association): Generally used by the social sciences, psychology, education and some hard sciences

Chicago (also called Turabian): Generally used in history courses or general courses

MLA (Modern Language Association): Generally used in humanities and writing courses
