Fences, Barbed Wire & Walls
I saw an old man in a window in Sterling, Colorado, An old man with no teeth and his eyes all rheumy and gray, Just past the slim shadows that the barren trees cast on the sidewalk In his front yard, and I wondered what he thought of that day.

Western Pleasure
He rode into the show ring with his shirttail hanging out. Wasn't packin' any silver on his track. To all the horse show hangers-on there wasn't any doubt; His saddle pad was once a gunny sack.

Bad News Home
While I sleep on Rod & Sue's floor near Deeth, Nevada before the Gathering, a three weight cross-bred Mexican steer is taken down afoot on Dry Creek four miles upstream from the Kaweah in California.

Poached Steer...for John and Chuck
"Gooks," the deputy says. We stand staring angry over impotent bones, empty rib cage scattered tacks and flattened grass a dead face with soft flesh beneath the jaw bone cut away to get out the tongue.

Near Mote, Nevada
the landscape blurs again, unmeasured Highway 80 miles away from the Stockman's coffeeshop, late Monday morning after the Gathering where he recited "Western Pleasure." I fell back into our watering eyes, as my forgotten rig ran, idled warm in the icy parking lot.

As You Ride
As you ride the high sierra with your packstring and your pony As your heart beats strong and lonely like the waves upon the sea, Does that eerie pull that drew us into this moth-like dance Cause your musings 'neath the moonrise to ever stop and think of me?

A Cowboy to the End
When a cowboy's old and all wore out You can take him off the ranch But he'll always be a cowboy You can tell with just a glance By the way his legs are bowed and bent, The way he wears his hat, By the wrinkles there around his eyes And other little clues like that.

The Cowboy's Hats
Cecil looked good in hats. Each one sat his head like it had been custom made, even if it hadn't, a black Stetson, with his own special crease, the first one I ever saw on him.

Buddhists Don't Ride Bucking Horses

Chicken Outfit
It might have been the supper, Gee, this bachelor cooking's great. Or it might have been the quantity, I knew I overate. It was just an average evening, I don't recall now what was said, But from the warm fire and the darkness Soon I toddered off to bed.

Haying Horses In My Hand
I see lathered teams in afternoon sun Cutting five foot swaths in yard-high hay. I smell drying coils that the dump rakes spun Of alfalfa and blue joint in contoured display. There's a buckrake skimming the ground, in my mind, In controlled weavings, to even the load. Overshot teams plod a monotonous grind: "Git up. whoa. Back." on a forty foot road.

I Am Not A Cowboy
beause cowboys don't cry and I can't fight back my 4-H'er greenhorn rapture while watching Cody foal--no white socks up front, a blaze face breaking through the giant dew--drop into the 10:15 a.m. sun, two hind socks stretched side-by-side in the dirt like reverse white-on-black exclamation marks, and yup "it's a filly!!"

The Tease
Practices her Provocative hip walk Wherever she goes. In bathroom mirrors She rehearses Half closed eyes Puckered lips And teasing techniques, Smiles sweetly to herself Ready for work.
