Living in the lap of luxury with a newer model of Olds
Times are tough here at Sims, but the Missus and I find we can still be extravagant now and then. She is addicted to bubble bath and I like to buy stuff on EBay.

Stuff the Missus saves could be a study in human behavior
There is one mysterious thing about the Missus; she doesn't save wrapping paper. I remember a number of older ladies back when I was a kid that wouldn't think of wasting good wrapping paper.

Presidential candidates should live in ND for a year
It's not hard to notice that another election year is here. It wasn't hard to notice it was coming, as frontrunners were in the news a year ago. I always wonder how anyone can be considered a frontrunner long before they are really scrutinized by the public.

Musical ability isn't what I'd like it to be
I wish I could sing. I wish I had more musical ability. How I would love it if I could stand in front of an audience and sing with confidence. It would be nice if I could walk outside early in the morning and just belt out a nice song. I have too much respect for my animals to do that.

Has March Madness hit your cowherd yet?
The cows must be in a good mood this spring; either that or I haven't been around much. Usually by this time I should have heard of several near death experiences involving mad calving cows and the people who attend them.

We do love our good beef up here in the Northern Plains
Things have picked up considerably here at Sims. We have fresh beef. Not only fresh beef, but good beef. Lots of rural people take beef for granted.

We should ask 'Where's the beef?' instead of blaming beef
Seems like America is getting more health conscious all the time. Americans are getting in worse shape all the time, but at least we are starting to feel bad about it.

'America Out West' as performed at Reno function
In 20 years of speaking at various events around the country, I have had some interesting experiences and have spoken in places where I never expected to perform. I am writing this on May 15. I have an interesting gig coming up May 17.

Posing for family photos is torture for most men
I have read several great African hunting books; books by Peter Capstick, terrific hunting tales of J. A. Hunter, and several others. Most of them mentioned early day hunter Carl Akeley.

On the road with Harold and getting to know him
People who talk too much are aggravating. I talk too much. It is not my fault. There are enablers out there who make us this way. These types of enablers are good listeners. My friend Harold has this affliction. He listens way too well.

Booger Red, the bull, and the day he got ridden
Times are tough here at Sims. For 40-some years I have been training colts to make a living. It could be worse; I never tried to make a living riding bulls.

Dan Patch, a true America sports hero
I never grew up idolizing sports heroes. I guess that was my dad's fault. He never paid much attention to sports; at least he sure was no fanatic about it.

Mechanical ability elusive to some
The world keeps on changing and I suppose at the same time stays the same. My friend Dale Hande mentioned some startling facts to me a few days ago. "Did you realize," Dale pondered, "that the nation's best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, and the tallest basketball player is a Chinese fella?"

Farmers, fencers know the value of a good patch
Summer is the season of the patch here at Sims. All I have to do is walk within d within 30 feet of any equipment and I wind up soaked in grease, oil, and diesel fuel. When I am forced to work around machinery a lot, as in the summer, I dip into the well-used clothes pile so as not to ruin my better duds.

School days 1975 - my first year as a teacher
Summers in North Dakota go by so fast it hardly seems worth having them. I see the school buses are on the road again. It has been a while since the start of the school year meant a big change in my lifestyle.

You can tell that fall is here in the Almont area. I hear they had their lutefisk meeting. A meeting is held each year a few weeks prior to the big supper to get the project in action.

North Dakota provided a perfect fall day for its celebrity visitor
I am writing this on Oct. 2. It is one of those glorious North Dakota fall days. The temperature is perfect, the wind is barely perceptible, and Sims has never looked any better.

Trip to Waverly was fun, interesting, profitable
I went to a horse sale a few days ago. I have been to a lot of horse sales, but this is one I have always wanted to see. Waverly, Iowa, is a long ways from Sims, N.D. I guess that is why I had never been there for the sale.

There's thrifty... and then there's Benny thrifty
I read with interest that the Republicans spent $150,000 on a new wardrobe for Sara Palin. The Missus claims she spends about $50/year. Sara's allowance would last the Missus about 3,000 years. She is proud of her thrift store shopping.

Wrestling steers can be good for your health
America is growing more health conscious all the time. I continue to worry about my own health as I grow older. I'd hate to get in as bad shape as my neighbor Jim Sailer who claims he was recently run over by a stationary bicycle. Some people walk, run, play basketball, or golf for their health. I prefer to enter the steer wrestling now and then for mine.

The father/daughter hunt for the Nelson family Christmas tree
I was visiting with some people from California a few days ago and they mentioned they had seen some Christmas trees priced from $800 to $1000. It inspired me to dig out a poem I wrote for my daughter to recite at a Christmas program years ago!
