A new dog in 2009 would be nice... or would it?
I probably won't be able to afford many new things in 2009, but I'm pretty sure I'll acquire a new dog. I need one pretty badly.

Another day in rural America with neighbor helping neighbor
It's been a grand winter here at Sims. I had almost forgotten what winter was like. It's been 11 years since I really had to push any snow. I got to thinking we would never see snow again. We are making up for lost time.

Don't know about the famous one, but this Liz Taylor was a real gem
For some reason or another, Towner (N.D.), the community I grew up in, was loaded with colorful characters. I don't quite know what caused it, but it seemed they were everywhere. Lots of them were great story tellers. Many of them did or said outrageous things. Some of them were hysterically funny. There were so many of them that I assumed they were average people.

North Dakota's unassuming Capitol, governor's mansion
It's comforting to know that our legislators are once again working around the clock trying to solve North Dakota's problems. They have a big problem this year as they have to find a way to blow the massive surplus North Dakota has accumulated; I believe something near $1 billion.

Bragging rights to coldest temps lost with new thermometer
I loved growing up on the Mouse River. There were lots of things I liked about the area. Winter was one of them.

Minnesota shopping trip was fun - and profitable!
Times are tough here at Sims. Although this has been been my favorite winter in many years, it has been an expensive one. The furnace keeps running and the cows keep eating.

Another day in rural America with neighbor helping neighbor
I don't know if things have picked up here at Sims or not, but we did get the black box. We have been warned for several months that our televisions were going to quit working on Feb. 17 unless we bought the black box.

Spring storms have ranchers hip deep in water, snow, mud
On the average, we get pretty good moisture here at Sims. OK, we were dry enough the last couple years, and desperately dry from 2002 through 2006, but all the moisture we missed just ran off of Sims last week on its way to the Gulf of Mexico.

Be wary of horse traders - they may be telling the truth!
I recently read a book I really enjoyed. It was called Mister You Got Yourself a Horse by Roger Welsch. It is a collection of interviews with old-time horse traders who were operating in the 1890s to the 1920s. It was a delightful read.

Choosing, training, loving, then losing a puppy
Kenny called me one day early in January. "Heard you're looking for a good dog." I had just written a column about my old cow dog getting old and pretty much worthless, other than just being a pal.

Celebrating 'World Day of Laughter' with complete strangers!
I don't care much for group activities. I really dislike parlor games. I enjoy being around people, but I like a little independence when it comes to having fun. It wasn't typical behavior for me when I got involved in the World Day of Laughter.

Late May-early June, when North Dakota is perfect
If you live on the Northern Great Plains and thought the winter and spring were a bit miserable, open the curtains and take a peek outside. Sometimes a dose of miserable weather yields some beautiful results.

Know your horse, its disposition... and hire someone to train it!
It seems like things are running late this spring; in fact, we are running out of spring. Summer starts June 21, and the days will start getting shorter. Many people still have lots of spring things to do and not much time left to do it. I guess I am caught up on everything but horse training. The late spring snowstorms and mud made it hard to get started.

4th of July rodeos - a cowboy's equivalent to Christmas
Cowboy Christmas is coming up. Every cowboy looks forward to Cowboy Christmas, or the Fourth of July weekend. It's hard to say just how many rodeos there are in the United States over the Fourth, but there are lots of them. There are many big pro shows and tons of amateur rodeos all over the country.

Remembering Gordon Olson - a guy you could talk to
Waves of regret washed over me as I sat in the pew at Gordon Olson's funeral. Why hadn't I found the time to visit with him more often? As a PhD and president of a university for 25 years he was my kind of guy. Maybe I should clarify that a bit.

Farmers, cowboys look at roadside bales differently
It's funny how technology can help some and hinder others. Take the round baler for instance. Most of the hay produced in the upper plains is now baled with a big round baler. The round baler helped reduce the workload for the farmer, but it made things tougher for the cowboy. It sure makes it harder to get a little rodeo hay.

It's advisable to be prepared for summer tornado season
It is hard to believe it is August in Sims, North Dakota. Every hill is green to the top. We are seeing more grass and hay than we have seen for years. Haying has been slow with the frequent rains, but who dares to complain?

2009 Senior Olympics included two Dakotans
Those of us on the Northern Plains can't help but pay special interest when someone from a rural area makes it big and gets drafted on a major big league sports team, but there are few players from our area that get that chance. it tickled me to see that we do have some athletes of note from this area.

Welcoming new son-in-law to the Nelson family
I was hauling bales on Aug. 27 when I got a call from my daughter, Annika. "Hi, Dad. Guess what? Tyler and I just got married!" I suppose the call wasn't unexpected, but it was a surprise. "You aren't mad, Dad, are you?"

It's fall again, often the shortest season of the year. It is an overlooked season in North Dakota. It just doesn't last long enough.

Restaurants can be memorable for all sorts of reasons
I like to eat as well as the next guy but I am not too fussy where I eat or what is on the menu. I don't wake up in the morning and think to myself that I would like to eat Chinese, Japanese, French, or Italian food that day. I guess I like North Dakota food as well as anything.

Recalling Uncle Ernie's many hunting trips to the area
No matter if you are a hunter or not, we are all affected somewhat by the fall hunting seasons. Seems like hunters are everywhere. Back country roads are busy with slow moving four wheel pickups with kennels in the back, small town bars and cafes are busy serving tired hunters, and you see orange all over the place.

Another successful year at Senior National Finals Rodeo
Well, we made another trip to the Senior National Finals Rodeo. I have made about 10 trips to the SNFR. It is hard to quit going to rodeos. I guess when I placed in the calf riding at the Bantry rodeo in 1956, I was hooked.

It's a proud moment watching a son become a doctor
We just made a trip to Minneapolis for my son's graduation. He has been going to school for 20 years or so. He is glad to be done with his education. We are proud to think he managed to hang in there and reach such a goal.
