Querecho Quilting Club
So once again we are faced with yet another dilemma in Querecho Flats. The Querecho Quilting Club needed a place to quilt that would not only leave their husbands alone for a couple of hours each week, but would give them a place to gossip where no one but the women present would know who they were talking about.

Well, the federales have done it again. They just had to stick their overeducated noses into the lives of some people who didn't want the help of the federal government anyway.

Querecho Regularity
Everyone knows that it's election time, and after listening to all the candidates blow and go on national television, I'm just plain sick of 'em. Garlan, Karl, and I had just come from the Querecho Flats Community Center/Weight Loss Boutique and had settled down to a serious conversation concerning the solution to all the world problems.

Village Idiots
Querecho Flats has a lot in common with most places that are of the same size. For example, it has its own little groups of people, such as the Church of the Better-Than-Thou and Per-Near-Perfect People, or even the gang over at Garlan's Mostly General Store and Post Office.

There has been a new enterprise introduced into Querecho Flats proper. Two of the area's leading ladies have discovered a new and wide-open livestock market.

Querecho Corriente
On average, I have at least six roping steers in my pens year 'round. This year I have only averaged five. I own six, but I've only managed five. You see, I have one that is related to that escape artist whodunit, or whatever his name is.

Querecho Flats Bimonthly Scorpion Stomping
In the fair village of Querecho Flats, there is a group of daring, not-so-young men and women who on occasion risk life and limb in order to protect some of the area residents from a terrible burning end. This particular group is known as The Querecho Flats Volunteer Firefighters.

Querecho's X-Rated Order
A while back Garlan and I got our little hands on a 27-X-rated catalog from some outfit in California. We ordered Karl one of them rubber blow-up love dolls, and it came in recently.

Querecho's Booze
Well, I finally got it done. Yep, I made every living human being in Querecho Flats mad at me. Even the little woman is slightly miffed. Yep, I really outdid myself this time. The bad thing is, I did it on purpose.

Boring Days are Here Again
Since the fall cattle shipping is over, most of the ranch hands are busy with their basic ranch work, and the oil field is as dull as it always is, there seems to be an air of peace and tranquility around Querecho Flats.

Cowboy Culture
In 1541, Coronado and his conquistadors marched across what is now Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, and Kansas, soon followed by others in search of cities of gold and souls to save. What they accomplished during their expeditions was dwarfed by the influence of what they left behind, the horse.

Youth and The Dream
Historians may disagree, but by and large the "romantic" period of the cowboy culture began about 1868 and was done by 1890. This was the time of the great trails, the Cimarron, the Santa Fe, the Chisholm and others. The railroads were expanding west and southward.

My Generation
Having a cultural discussion with a twelve year old can be an enlightening experience and at times more relevant and to the point than with most Ph.D.'s I know. in discussing the recent passing of a teen rock star, I was trying to make the patronizing point that this star really wasn't a good role model and probably didn't deserve all the media attention, and that there are far better examples to be followed by the youth of America. For a brief frightening moment, I sounded exactly like my own father in 1968.

Class of '70
Venturing forth into a brave new world, the class of '70 was part of a new generation of Americans that would forever change the way we see ourselves and our culture. Having come of age during one of the most divisive wars in our history, the class of '70 faced a future and a country embarking on a path of irreversible change.

The Pope, The Pulpit and The Prairie
It is hard to believe that an event half a world away in Europe and inside the Vatican would have a profound influence on the American cowboy and in turn, today's culture, centuries before Jesse Chisholm or others ever thought of convincing a cow to move north.

Uniformitarianism
Uniformitarianism is not a word you hear very often. In fact, the majority of inhabitants of the earth live their entire lives without once being exposed to it, although it has a great impact on who and what they are as individuals and as a culture.

Spirit in the Wind
Nothing last forever except the wind and sky, so goes the song, and it's probably true. For countless centuries, long before man emerged on the journey of civilization, the wind blew, and the grass grew on what is now the Great Plains of North America.
